After a short two day trip back home and some frantic gear switching, I arrived in South America. First stop Quito, Ecuador, the city of Alley of Volcanos. (graphic picture below of people’s shrunken heads! Proceed with caution!)
Without wasting any time, I jumped into touring the city and trying the local food. Quito is another city where the Spanish left plenty of footprints. The famous National Cathedral is just one of them. Not only was the inside of the cathedral worth visit, the tower of the cathedral also offered a great view of the city.

Friend fish, device, popcorn, and fruit smoothie. All local food.
A visit to Ecuador cannot be complete without a picture at the equator. The memorial “Mitad Del Mondo” is located on mathematically calculated equator by the French. A recent military GPS measurement actually shows that the calculation was off by around 200 meters. To make sure that I “actually” visited the equator, I made sure to visit both sites.
The second equator museum actually offered a tour which I highly recommend for $4. As part of the tour, you can see an actual shrunken human head!! A tribe in Ecuador used to boil their defeated enemies’ heads to make jewelry. Wearing them was to show the importance of the tribesmen and strike fear into the enemy’s hearts.

Never forget to sample the local alcohol!
