Tel Aviv and Kibbutz

Tel Aviv is like any big city. Full of hustle and bustle, as well as a bit of history. This coastal city is the vibrant financial heart of Israel. The city itself is a good start to explore the establishment of Israel as a nation. The nearby Old Jaffa port is a good place to branch out for a half of a day tour of some history and art. I recommend biking around Tel Aviv as the city can be pretty spread out. Just beware, sometimes the ocean wind is not so kind. So be prepared for a good exercise.

Some of the Kibbutz nearby Tel Aviv and all-around Israel are open for touring some days of the week. They also accept Jewish young adults from all over the world who are on their Jewish roots trip. Most of the kibbutz are communal in keeping with the traditions. Many kibbutzes that are still going today own some sort of enterprise owned and operated by their own member. However, in keeping up with the capitalistic culture in the rest of the world as well as parts of Israel, many kibbutzim made adjustments to their cultures and rules. The kibbutz we visited allowed gay marriage, keeping a self-earned income, allow non-kibbutzim members to work in their enterprises, and adopt children from other countries. These customs and rules differ from each Kibbutz so one should check before they decide to engage or visit one.
